EASL 2009: an excellent vintage
The leading European convention which is organized every year by EASL (the European Association for the Study of the Liver) gathered over 7,500 hepatology specialists in Copenhagen, Denmark and a large part of it was reserved for non-invasive tests of BioPredictive.
BioPredictive organized a very highly visited stand again this year where a large number of doctors could try out FibroTest for the first time using interactive terminals.
New publications
This convention was the occasion for publishing many studies about our FibroTest and FibroMax technologies.
Liver fibrosis screening in the general population
A study done on 7,500 subjects in the Paris region without known history of liver disease attempted to estimate the prevalence of subjects with advanced fibrosis through the use of FibroTest as a first line diagnostic tool.
This screening strategy using FibroTest for hepatic fibrosis in subjects aged 40 years or more appeared to be effective and was accepted by 50% of the social insurances. The prevalence of subjects with advanced fibrosis that was found on screening with FibroTest was 2.8% with 5 identified risk factors: metabolic, age, male sex, alcohol consumption and hepatitis C.
The combination of FibroTest and a serum marker of excessive alcohol consumption (CDT) in over 1,000 subjects that participated in the screening enabled us to better identify the mixed alcoholic and metabolic origin of the fibrosis, which had been previously underestimated in the self-reporting of alcohol consumption.
FibroTest predictive of the viral response to retreatment in HCV non-responders
An international, multicenter study on 1,459 HCV patients that were non-responders to a previous treatment showed the diagnostic and prognostic utility of FibroTest at baseline for predicting the sustained viral response.
New prognostic value
An independent French study that included 1,346 patients with different hepatic diseases and who were followed-up for 4 years demonstrated that the FibroTest score was predictive of complications, with an overall survival that was clearly decreased at 4 years for scores > 0.74; these new results are similar to the three previously published studies.

FibroTest for better identification of inactive carriers
An independent French study on 117 patients with hepatitis B showed that the FibroTest presented excellent specificity for the diagnosis of inactive carriers (F0); the authors advise its use as a noninvasive first-line diagnostic marker for the evaluation of chronic hepatitis B.

FibroTest correlated to the virological response to HCV treatment
An independent study that was carried out in the USA on 134 HCV patients showed that FibroTest was the only marker that was predictive of the sustained virological response; the FibroTest score at the end of treatment was improved in recovered versus non-recovered patients.

FibroTest used in a therapeutic antifibrotic study
A French, multicenter pilot study used FibroTest together with liver biopsy to estimate the effect of a pentoxyphilline-alpha-tocopherol combination on fibrosis progression in HCV non-responder patients. The study did not detect an antifibrotic effect of this therapeutic combination on the histology (biopsy) or on FibroTest compared to the placebo.

FibroMax (FibroTest plus SteatoTest) used to evaluate steatosis and fibrosis in a general population
A study on 375 subjects originating from the Israeli National Health Survey used SteatoTest and FibroTest in place of biopsy for studying the correlation of certain cytokines with steatosis and fibrosis. Adiponectin and leptin were correlated with steatosis that was predicted by SteatoTest.
In this general population, the observed prevalence of significant steatosis is 26% according to the SteatoTest and the prevalence of fibrosis is 12.5% according to FibroTest.

About our tests
BioPredictive offers 5 non-invasive (blood sample) diagnostic tests of liver diseases:
- Two tests for the lesions :
- FibroTest, which estimates liver fibrosis,
- SteatoTest, for estimating steatosis,
- Three tests for liver inflammation :
- NashTest, estimator of inflammation related to metabolic factors (NASH)
- AshTest, estimator of inflammation related to alcohol
- ActiTest, estimator of necroinflammatory activity
The 5 tests are marketed together in the “FibroMax” package
These tests are available through the simple prescription of a blood test at your usual laboratory (serum markers), followed by score calculations on this site with immediate results.
